In the Millenia that have passed, the world of Terra has been no different than any other world in any other existence. Centuries upon centuries of civilization, generation upon generation of lives and families, page upon page of research into the various methods of ultimate power.
Terra's history before the Great War is unnecessary, and only truly cared for by Lucian researchers or intuitive Scientists. It is always assumed that the three various nations always existed, and always would. Of course wars before had been known to under go between the various powers, but they were always minor conflicts that were easily resolved and forgotten.
The Certamen War was different.
Just a few decades before the war's arrival, the eastern power known then as the State of Maia engaged in an event that would change the face of the world: the Industrial Revolution. The discovery of mass production and interchangeable parts resulted in the rapid construction of various technologies. Within those decades separating the rise of new scientific advances to the Great War, the Maian economy became fiercely competitive and dominating, one particular example of a rising power known as the Shussei Corporation, a farming technology producer.
Finally, the whispers of war began to rise. Speculation suggests that the Shussei Corporation offered the idea of expansion to the leaders of their nation, while Lucian historians claim the Maians simply desired new territory. Whatever the reason, the Republic of Bremelia - one of Terra's most resourceful lands - soon found itself under invasion through its mountain border from their Maian neighbors. The Maians completely ignored the open valley ranges of the Umberlands to invade their new enemy, and instead chose to surprise the defending nation through the rugged terrain.
While the Bremelians had been able to purchase and implement their own technologies, they soon found the weaponry of the Maian government and the Shussei Corporation too difficult to resist. Soon, the western cities and towns sent a plea of help to the Lucian Empire, begging for aid. The reply was responded to with the magical nation's entire military force.
As Lucian Calvary forces marched through the western Myrra Desert, Maian forces tread towards the heartland of Bremelia, hoping to gain a quick victory. Yet, national resistance held strongly, as trench warfare between the two militaries was quickly relied upon. Regardless of their technological superiority, magical knowledge helped the Bremelians hold their own long enough for the Lucians to open a flanking line.
The pressure of two significant powers forcing a two-way war upon the Maian Republic brought much internal conflict in the eastern nation. The Republic's economic super powers quickly took advantage of the political tensions in the Parliament and created new political parties. The largest party of these groups was that of the Shussei Corporation. Arguing for the working class, the strength of the economy, and the pride of the military, Shussei easily took control as the majority power, and quickly replaced the Democracy with a Capitalistic State. The new government reorganized their military, and within months, the new Shussei military was able to organize well enough to stem off Lucian offensives and hold the line.
That was all they could do. Now a year into the war, the Maians had only reached a few kilometers past Greyton and edging towards Bremelia's eastern port city of Ghadston.
Two years passed in stalemate, the only real event happening to be a significant aid to the Shusseians: the capture and occupation of Ghadston port. Able to refuel their fleets in closer proximity to their foe, the eastern invaders were able to volley more artillery fire toward the Bremelian lines, and sent task forces to siege and blockade Bremelia's capital of Temperance and its port town of Silviana.
Another year, and the war's toll began to show in the Bremelian people. The city of Temperance was quickly turning into a scrap heap, the majority of their resources were under enemy control, the Lucians were making no real (although propaganda claimed otherwise) advancements to victory, and the Shusseians were showing no signs of backing down. In this year, the Bremelian military chose a new, practically suicidal tactic: to leave their trenches behind, and to press toward the enemy lines wildly. Casualties on both sides quickly, yet the Bremelian troops were successful in regaining Greyton and Ghadston, and actually began to press the Shusseians toward the mountainside.
Yet, suddenly, the war was over. The Lucians had apparently spent months negotiating peace with their enemies without Bremelian knowledge, and had agreed on a peace. The Shusseians immediately pulled out of the broken lands, the Lucians claimed ultimate victory, and the Bremelians were left to rebuild.
But how? Their government was gone - destroyed in the siege of Temperance - their highways and plains were burned and dismembered, and their mountains were charred to smoldering dust. It only made things worse that the Lucians and Shusseians both suddenly took interest in restoring the nation and helped completely reforge their government into a puppet position.
The former Republic became a subtly occupied Federation, and the two remaining superpowers continued to go in power. To this day, the Shusseians hold economic power over Bremelia's resources, and the Lucians continue to gain new sorcerers and influence in the puppet nation's western cities. The Bremelians are a broken people, no longer the pride land they once were.
And some have taken notice, and become willing to rebel. So begins the conflicts of the new age, and the coming war to come: the Adean War.
